Since Apple presented iCloud I see a lot of people looking for more informations about iWeb, MobileMe and iCloud. Some of them seem to be a little confused about what iCloud actually is. So here I try to answer the questions you may have...

Chapter 1: What happened to MobileMe?

MobileMe was terminated on June 30th 2012 and is no longer available.

What happens to my calendars?

To know how to embed calendars into your website please have a look at this page.

Chapter 2: What is iCloud?

iCloud is a service which will allow you to wirelessly sync multiple computers and iOS devices (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad) to each other.

In addition iCloud also offers an Address Book, Calendar, Mail (@me.com) and Backup features which were formerly part of MobileMe.

Chapter 3: Can I host my website on iCloud?

No. iCloud doesn't offer any hosting capability. If you hosted your websites on MobileMe you have to find a new hosting. Have a look at Chapter 4 on this page for some suggestions.

Chapter 4: Where should I host my websites now?

More informations about publishing your website to a server other than MobileMe and some recommended hostings are found on my Publishing and Hosting FAQ.

I would recommend you to use HostGator since it's the hosting I use and I know that it works great. Here you will find some basic instructions and FAQs I wrote on using HostExcellence...

Chapter 5: I had a website on MobileMe. What now? How can I get it?

If you had a website on MobileMe it will now say you can't access it anymore.

If you built the site with iWeb the website is still on your computer in iWeb, in Domain file where iWeb stores its data on your computer. iWeb's data wasn't stored on MobileMe but on your computer. So all you'd have to do would be choosing a new hosting (see Chapter 4 of this page) and publish your website to that hosting.

If you had a personal domain like yourdomain.com pointing to your MobileMe website you will have to change the DNS (NS Servers) on your domain registrar's site to reflect your new hosting. Your new hosting will tell you what they should look like for your domain to point to your website.

If you had any files on your iDisk which you'd like to get I don't think this possible anymore. When MobileMe was discontinued there was a certain period of them where it was still possible to access the files but I think this period is over.

Chapter 6: What happens to iWeb? Was it discontinued?

There are a lot of hints pointing to the fact that iWeb is being phased out/discontinued.

- iWeb wasn't updated in iLife '11

- iWeb is not being sold on the App Store

- iWeb doesn't come pre-installed on new Apple Computers since the release of OS Lion anymore

Chapter 7: Does iWeb work with Mac OS X Mountain Lion? Can I still use iWeb?

Yes, iWeb 3.0 still works under OS X Mountain Lion with no problems at all. Even if iWeb is not being actively developed anymore, you will still be able to create, edit and publish your website with iWeb for at least a few years (just not publishing to MobileMe).

Chapter 8: Where can I get iWeb from?

If you bought a new Mac and want to have iWeb on it...

- If you have an old Mac with iWeb on it all you have to do is get iWeb application from the Applications folder of the old Mac and transfer it to the new Mac

- If it's your first Mac or you don't have iWeb on your old Mac and want to have it on your new Mac try to find an iLife '09 or iLife '11 DVD to install iWeb

Remember to also transfer your Domain file where iWeb stores its data to your new computer!

Chapter 9: So... What should I do? Where should I go after iWeb?

As long as it works I would continue to use iWeb. I would only change to another application the day iWeb really doesn't work anymore. There currently is no application which is as easy to use as iWeb is and there's no other application with drag&drop object placement capability.

I see no reason to hurry and change to another application now.  Together with http://iwebfaq.org, the iWebFAQ.org E-Book and similar sites out there I think iWeb is still a very good choice to build your website!

Just look for a good hosting to host your website with.

Again, as long as iWeb still works I would stick with iWeb.

The day iWeb will not work anymore or if you're already looking for alternatives I would really recommend you to switch to Realmac's RapidWeaver. Also have a look at my RapidWeaverFAQ.org website and my RapidWeaverFAQ.org E-Book. If you decide to use RapidWeaver you may want to have a look at my short Migrating from iWeb to RapidWeaver FAQ.

Another alternative would be WordPress. Also have a look at my WPFAQ.org website and my WPFAQ.org E-Book. How to install WordPress on HostExcellence is described here.

For more details on these alternatives have a look at this page this page.

What will happen to iwebfaq.org?

Nothing. It will be here for as long as people still use iWeb.

Chapter 10: Things not working anymore since MobileMe was closed. Fixes and alternatives. (READ ME!)

Since Apple discontinued MobileMe there are some things in iWeb which don't work anymore. Either because some files were stored on MobileMe servers (Slideshows) or because they used to work only on MobileMe (Comments, Password Protect)

iWeb's photos slideshow

Since MobileMe was discontinued iWeb's photos slideshows don't display any forward, backward and pause buttons anymore since these were stored on MobileMe servers.

A fix for this issue was provided by Old Toad and Roddy McKay on this page.

1) Close iWeb

2) Navigate to your Applications folder, select iWeb and right-click (ctrl+click) on it, choose Show Package Contents

3) Go to Contents/Resources/Scripts/Site/ and open iWPopUpSlideshow.js in TextWrangler

4) Where it says

    var baseURL = "http://www.me.com/1/slideshow/";

change it to

   var baseURL = "/slideshow/";

then save the changes (cmd+s). Close TextWrangler and the Finder window.

5) Click here to do download a folder named slideshow and upload it to the root of your server/website (What is the root?) so entering

http://yourdomain.com/slideshow/images/arrow_left-on.gif

into your browser will bring up this file. If it doesn't you uploaded the slideshow folder to the wrong location on your server.

6) (Re-)Publish your site

In case it says you don't have permissions to change that file just select the file, hit cmd+i (or ctrl+click and choose Get Info), go to Sharing & Permissions, click on the Lock icon you find in the bottom-right corner of the Info window, enter your Admin password, and change your permissions to Read & Write. Once you gave yourself those privileges click the Lock icon again.

Password protect/Login

Have a look at the instructions you find in Chapter 6 of this page. If you're not using HostExcellence your hosting should provide something similar.

If your hosting doesn't provide any password protection you may want to follow this tutorial instead. However note that this is not a good way to protect your content.
