What is a Podcast? How can I make one? How does it work with iWeb?

I’m not a podcaster and I hate to listen to my own voice so this is going to be pretty basic for what concerns recording.

This FAQ is still a work in progress. I will work on it while my personal experience grows.

All you would ever want to know about podcasting is written this Apple pages

Most of it talks about how to make the feed of the podcast since iWeb takes care of that you don’t have to mind about it.

Chapter 1: What is a Podcast

Chapter 2: How to make your own podcast

Chapter 3: iWeb and podcasting

Chapter 4: How to submit a Podcast to iTunes

Chapter 5: I want a podcast but don’t want people to see the Podcast-Blog and pages, I just want a button to subscribe and that’s it, is that possible?

Chapter 6: How can I know the statistics how many people subscribed to the podcast, where they are from etc.?

Chapter 1: What is a Podcast

Podcasting. “Pod” derives from iPod and “casting” from broadcasting. Often referred to as a way to “Broadcast yourself” it’s a series of media content (either audio or video) which is distributed through the web (mostly through iTunes). People can subscribe to Podcasts to get notified when a new episode is published and have it downloading automatically or manually choose which episodes they want to download.

The reason Podcasts are so successful is that you can watch and listen them whenever you want and wherever you are with portable media players like the iPod or the iPhone and they are free of charge.

Chapter 2: How to make your own podcast

Everyone can build his own podcast about no matter what.

To record an audio podcast there are appropriate applications but you can also use GarageBand. You can use your Mac’s integrated microphone or an external mic.

To record a video podcast you can use iMovie and your digital camera or your Mac’s integrated iSight camera.

GarageBand and iMovie are both included in the iLife suite along with iWeb and are applications which are really easy to use. You really don’t have to be a pro to record a podcast.

You can also use Keynote. Export the presentation as a movie or record it from your screen using QuickTime ion SnowLeopard (File, New Screen Recording).

As you see there are many many ways to record a podcast. Depending on the content choose the way that best fits your needs. All of them are pretty easy.

Once you recorded the Podcast you have to export it in a (preferably) iPod and iPhone compatible format. If you use iMovie or GarageBand or any other application that’s really easy to do. Then you have to publish it to the web with an RSS Feed to make it available to the public. One out of many ways to do this is using iWeb.

Chapter 3: iWeb and podcasting

In iWeb go to “Add Page”, choose a theme for your Podcast page and choose the Podcast template. The Podcast page works like a Blog (but you can’t use a Blog for it).

Change the look of the template as you want. Enter a description and so on.

Each episode of your Podcast will have its own entry. On the entries pages there’s a placeholder for media content (audio and video). It’s important that you drop your recorded content in these placeholder boxes.

Chapter 4: How to submit a Podcast to iTunes

That’s described here.

Chapter 5: I want a podcast but don’t want people to see the podcast blog and pages, I just want a button to subscribe and that’s it, is that possible?

In iWeb you have a Subscribe button which is nothing but a particular link to the RSS feed.

When you put your mouse pointer over the published button at the bottom of the Safari window you will see that it redirects to something like this:

itpc://iwebfaq.org/podcast/Podcast/rss.xml

(note the itpc:// in front of the URL)

So what you could do is hide the Podcast blog from the menu and add another page instead. On that page add an image or write some text for the Subscribe link and have it linking to the above mentioned URL.

On the page also mention that people will have to install iTunes on their computer to be able to subscribe to the Podcast. Otherwise the link doesn’t work for them.

Chapter 6: How can I know the statistics how many people subscribed to the podcast, where they are from etc.?

For the statistics you could use Feedburner. Submit your iWeb Podcast RSS Feed to Feedburner and you will get another feed. Submit this feed to iTunes and also use it for the SUbscribe button on your website instead of using the iWeb feed.

However you continue to use iWeb to manage your Podcast (add new episodes, ...).

Feedburner gets you statistics on how many people subscribed to your Podcast, where they come from, ... Also you can combine Feedburner with Google Analytics (more info here).
