I was wondering how many sites you can have in one domain.sites2 file before you notice a performance slowdown. I'm using iWeb09 and have read with previous versions about splitting the domain file. But I thought that was because with previous versions of iWeb you couldn't edit one site without republishing every site. And with previous versions you couldn't publish individual site to different servers. I currently only have 3 sites in the one domain file, but am getting ready to add a few more. I currently publish 2 of them to Host Excellence and the other to MobileMe. So is splitting the domain.sites2 file a thing of the past or still necessary to do. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know. I never tried. Also it my not only depend on the number of site but also on how many pages the sites have and the content of all those pages. As long as you don't experience a slow down yourself it's ok. The day you think it's slow you may think about splitting it up.

I don't think splitting is a thing of the past. I personally prefer to have a domain for each website (each website is made out of multiple sites, the iwebfaq.org website perhaps is made out of 7 sites all in one domain) instead of having all sites of all websites in one file. To me it looks much cleaner. It's up to you to decide what you feel more comfortable with.

Regards,
Cédric

:) Thank you Cedric for replying. A follow up if I may - After splitting the domain file, how do you open iWeb. Do you open the iWeb app or do you have to open via the individual Domain.Sites2 files?

iWeb always remembers which Domain file you worked on the last time you opened the application. Hence as long as you want to work on the same Domain file you open iWeb by simply clicking on the application in the dock. When you want to change the Domain file to work on then open the application by double-clicking the other Domain file.

Cedric,
I copied the Domain.Sites2 file that contained 3 Sites. Opened the copy>deleted a family Site published to Mobileme with no issues. Then tried to delete the second Site which I publish to Host Excellence and got this message: "This site will be removed from iWeb. Would you also like the site removed online?". I selected "Remove", expecting a second message asking if I wanted to delete from the server, but the site was removed from iWeb and deleted from the server. So I had to republish back to the server(slight hassle). Is there a way to simply remove the site from iWeb and not the server?

If you select Remove of course the website will be removed from the server since that's what "online" means. If you say "No" (or whatever the other choice is) the website will only be removed from iWeb.

The choices are Cancel and Remove. If I choose Cancel, the site is not removed from iWeb. If I choose Remove, the Site is removed from iWeb as well as the Server. I don't see a choice to remove only from iWeb. I need the site on the Server because it's an old Site that I'm using a 301 redirect .htaccess file to redirect to my new Site. It seems the only way to do it is to Remove the Site and republish. Does that sound correct??

I would try to change the way you publish first. Instead of FTP change it to "To a folder" and try deleting it that way maybe it works. Otherwise I guess it doesn't work. Very strange to me but well I didn't make the app.

Publishing to a local Folder worked like a charm. Thanks

Don't scream- but one more thing, only if you have time and desire. So I now have multiple Domain.Sites2 files. If I want to create a new, completely separate Site, how do I open iWeb so that the new Site will be created in it's own Domain.Sites2 file, rather than one I currently have??

You have various Domain files. iWeb always remembers the last one you opened. If you move that Domain file from the location it is stored in (perhaps move it on the Desktop when you usually have it in a Folder somewhere) and open iWeb, iWeb doesn't that Domain file anymore and will ask you whether you want to choose one or create a new one. Choose to create a new one (and where to save it). Now you have an entirely new Domain, new site. Once this is done you can put the other Domain file back into its original location.
