The million dollar trick or how to fix iWeb in 10.6.2

Posted by Cédric

Here’s how to fix the “iWeb quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plug-in” error.

This is called “The million dollar trick or how to fix iWeb in 10.6.2″ since a lot of people struggled with it since the 10.6.2 release. With no real solution. Simply deactivating Hoefler Text as suggested on the ADFs doesn’t really solve it. Now here you are…

Note: As visitors are writing in the comments it also works to fix Keynote and Pages (Thank you)

————–ENGLISH————–

1. Go to Applications => Font book
2. Select Hoefler => Ctrl+click on it and “Remove Hoefler Text Family”
3. A message will appear telling you that all Hoefler files will be trashed
4. Emptying trash you will probably be told that the file is in use. Restart your computer and after the restart empty the trash.
5. Click here to download Hoefler text
6. You will find a folder called “11628″. In it you find a file called “Hoefler Text.dfont”
7. Move that file to:
Macintosh HD => Library => Fonts

Start iWeb and you will see that it’s perfectly working.

Cédric (http://iwebfaq.org)

6. Du wirst einen Ordner vorfinden mit dem Namen “11628″. Darin findest du eine Datei “Hoefler Text.dfont”

————– OFFICIAL SOLUTION POSTED BY APPLE ————–

Here’s the “official solution” by Apple themselves (better late than never, right?!). You will never ever find it by Googling since there are no keywords at all on Apple’s page (you really have to improve that Apple!) so here is the link:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3161

————– IF NONE OF THE ABOVE WORKED ————–

If nothing worked so far then you still have a few things you could try…

- As posted by LW in the comments try restoring an older version of the Domain from a backup

- Try the “A few general tips” of Chapter 2.1 of my Known issues and general troubleshoot FAQ (Make a Backup first!)

- Try reinstalling iWeb

    Excellent, many thanks.

Unfortunately, I can’t empty the trash with the Hoefler font, even after restarting. I get the same message that the font is currently in use. Any ideas?

*Use Spotlight to find “Terminal”. Once you’re there paste this code in it:

    rm -rf ~/.Trash/*

    and hit enter.

Thanks! This solved my problem immediately. Apple should post its solution under the error name that appears when iWeb quits. Very difficult to find the solution otherwise.

  • Marc Dutil says:

Fixes similar problem in Keynote as well — bless you!

  • Norm says:

Thank you, thank you! It works for me, too. This was also a problem in the “About Me” page of the “Goldenrod” theme in iWeb’s 2.0 Themes. This solution worked there, too, as Hoeffler text was used on that page.
    Thanks again!
