iWebFAQ.org E-Book

My very own mission and the goal of this E-Book is not to tell you how iWeb works. That’s pretty easy and doesn’t need many explanations. My very own mission and the goal of this E-Book is to show you what you can do in iWeb in addition to the obvious things. Explain in plain English without using unnecessary technical jargon how to achieve the effect you want in steps which are simple to follow even with no technical knowledge. In other words the goal is to provide you the tools to easily get more out of iWeb.

The million dollar trick or how to fix iWeb in 10.6.2

Here’s how to fix the “iWeb quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plug-in” error.

This is called “The million dollar trick or how to fix iWeb in 10.6.2″ since a lot of people struggled with it since the 10.6.2 release. Now here are various things you could try if you experience this problem…

Update 1: As visitors are writing in the comments it also works to fix Keynote, Pages and Numbers (Thank you!)

Update 2: Up until the day Apple released iWeb 3.0.2 the Tip #1 and #2 worked great to fix this issue in iWeb. When Apple released 3.0.2 they claimed to have fixed this problem. Guess what? They didn’t. But people started reporting that Tip #1 and #2 didn’t work to fix iWeb anymore. Nevertheless you may want to try them anyway…

Don’t try all the tips at the same time. Try one tip after the order as they are listed here…

Tip #1

1. Go to Applications => Font book
2. Select Hoefler => Ctrl+click on it and “Remove Hoefler Text Family”
3. A message will appear telling you that all Hoefler files will be trashed
4. Emptying trash you will probably be told that the file is in use. Restart your computer and after the restart empty the trash.
5. Click here to download Hoefler text
6. You will find a folder called “11628″. In it you find a file called “Hoefler Text.dfont”
7. Move that file to:
Macintosh HD => Library => Fonts

Tip #2

The “official solution” posted by Apple themselves (link) (better late than never, right?!). You will never ever find it by Googling since there are no keywords at all on Apple’s page (you really have to improve that Apple!):

1. Shut down your computer.
2. Start up your computer while holding down the Shift key. This starts your computer in Safe Mode.
3. Open the application that quit unexpectedly

Tip #3

Try deleting the preferences file:

1. Quit iWeb
2. Delete the following file:
User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iweb.plist
(or the same but containing Keynote in the name or whatever application you’re trying to troubleshoot)
3. Relaunch iWeb
If that doesn’t work… Retry it but instead of relaunching iWeb in 3. restart the computer and relaunch iWeb

Tip #4

It may be that only one(or more) of your pages is(are) corrupted. So this tip consists in adding a new site and finding the culprit (Thanks Roddy!)

Find out whether the problem is in your Domain or the application itself (iWeb)

1. Close iWeb
2. Find your Domain (how this is done is written here) and move it to another location (Desktop, wherever)
3. Open iWeb and it will prompt you whether you would like to create a new Domain or open an existing project. Choose to create a new one (be careful to not overwrite the other one)
4. Try creating a few pages and try to publish the site (perhaps to a folder).
- If this doesn’t work the problem is in the application itself and you will have to reinstall it
- If publishing the dummy site works the problem is in your domain. Hence close iWeb, trash the Domain of the site you just created (the one with the dummy site NOT the one with your website in it!). Move the original Domain back into its location and double click it to open iWeb. Now go on reading to find the culprit and fixing the Domain…

Finding the culprit

1. Open iWeb. Under File select New Site.
2. Select a page of your website and drag it into the new site
3. If this works and you can publish the new site (perhaps try publishing to a folder) this page is fine and not the culprit of the issues you’re experiencing.
4. Do the same page after page. Move them to the new site and try publishing.
5. In the end you should have all the pages which work listed under the new site. The old site will only consist of the page (or pages) causing you troubles.
6. Delete the old site and rebuild the pages which were causing problems under the new site.

If the page(s) is(are) still published on the web you can copy&paste the text and use drag&drop for the images to make the process of rebuilding it(them) faster.

Tip #5

As posted by LW in the comments try restoring an older version of the Domain from a backup

Tip #6

Try reinstalling iWeb

Please give me your feedback about this page

Let me know which of the above tips worked for you to fix iWeb and Write A Comment. Also let me know if none of the above worked or if you’ve found another fix which worked for you…
